Sawmill Family!
Let me tell you a quick story. I know the football season is over, but let’s hang onto those days for a bit longer.
One of my favorite sports writers (yes, he was a beat writer for the Indianapolis Colts), after every game, would write a “report card” for how the team did and give a brief description of how he saw each area:
Offense: B+
Defense: A
Special Teams: C
In addition to all the expected areas, there was always one final section called “the intangibles.” Here, he would review a pivotal play, the exact moment the momentum changed in the game, or something else. It was all super subjective. And this author was pretty much a lightning rod – you either agreed with him or hated him. I think one of the reasons I liked him so much is because I generally agree with his assessment of the “intangibles.” Hold onto that thought for just a moment.
When I last wrote I primarily focused on the majority of our community – those of you who are worshiping with us online and were/are unable to gather in person. YOU are still the majority! You continue to be missed and we look forward to seeing you when you’re able and ready.
On the other hand, we have now been regathering on Sunday mornings for a month. More people have joined each week. More families are registering their kids for our VC Kids ministry. People are finding a safe space where they can encounter God with hope for what’s ahead.
For those of you in the in-between – those who might be willing, able, and otherwise ready to gather but just haven’t yet - I know there are tons of variables. Nevertheless, I want to gently say it’s time to come back. Not because it’s “your Christian duty” or anything like that but because of…the intangibles. The intangibles of being in the room to sing to one another (Colossians 3:16). The intangibles of praying together. The intangibles of experiencing the Holy Spirit in ministry time. (Even though we are doing it a little differently in this season.) The simple intangibles of seeing and hearing people welcome you at the door and realizing that faith is meant to be done in community and you’re not alone. All these intangibles (and many more) reinforce our faith.
I am well-aware that worshiping online is convenient. My Sunday mornings have sped back up in the last month! But one of the things I will be encouraging our community to know in the coming weeks is that following Jesus will never be defined by what’s convenient.
If you’re not ready to join us quite yet, you are the majority!
If you’re already joining us and experiencing the intangibles, we’ll see you this weekend!
If you’re in the in-between "willing, but…,” it’s time! We will create more space through additional services as needed so that you can experience the intangibles!
Hopeful,
-Scott.
